What you'll discover
Grief, illness, depression, job loss, breakups: when life gets heavy for someone you love, good intentions often freeze. This guide replaces "let me know if you need anything" with help that actually lands.
It covers the first days, what to say and what to avoid, listening without fixing, the long weeks when support fades, and how to care for yourself while you care for them. Not therapy, and honest about when to call in professionals.

A real story from the book
In 2007, psychiatrist Dixon Chibanda began training grandmothers in Harare, Zimbabwe, to sit on benches outside clinics and listen. A 2016 trial in JAMA found people who talked with them had significantly fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety six months later.
